London calling

With due deference to the Clash and their classic track from 1979, I happened to be in the city this week standing upon a roof in Fleet Street.

As I looked around at the adjacent buildings it was plain to see that within a distance of a few blocks there was a large amount of cooling equipment. Each chiller, dry air cooler, VRV and the many free standing condensers were drawing in London's contaminated air.

This air contains dust, insects, pollen, seeds, feathers and many other airborne particles which are drawn into this plant creating a thermal blanket. This "blanket" reduces the heat dissipation from the fins reducing cooling efficiency and clogging the filters.

What does this mean?

A higher head pressure causing motors to work harder and use more energy.

If you have a chiller with 100kW input power, the increased cost of the energy could be as much as £4,000.00 per annum for a 1,500 hour cooling season.

That is why it is so important to protect these fins with the unique Permatron Air Intake Filter Screen For details of applications and pictures of recent installations please visit

It is less about London's Calling with air intake filter screens, and more about helping London's Cooling.
